Until April 23rd, the Cité de la Dentelle et de la Mode (City of Lace and Fashion) in Calais welcomes the “Mode in Taiwan” exhibition featuring the techniques and artistic approaches of three Taiwanese designers: APUJAN, Shao-Yen Chen and Mei-Hui Liu. Today a daring, avant-garde, contemporary Asia continues to surprise and influence the fashion world. Each designer here presents a model in Calais-Caudry® lace imagined for the show in partnership with companies from the region. An opportunity to associate their creative universes with the time-honored skills of France’s lacemakers. The three-month show displays a total of 80 models that highlight deconstruction, collages and weaving.
As a 2010 graduate of Central Saint Martins, designer Shao-Yen CHEN’s research and experiments on the body as well his questioning of materials’ properties results in lively sculptural clothing. He was inspired by a Sophie Hallette lace to make two exceptional pieces: a tunic and pants. With his games of contrasts, colors, styles and techniques, his silhouettes show a penchant for Surrealism and conceptual fashion. CHEN’s alluringly elegant, free, uninhibited couture combines minimal geometric cuts, neo-Victorian styles and American sportswear with Japanese street fashion…
This lively voyage to the crossroads of fashions and cultures integrates Asia’s dynamic, young avant-garde into today’s fashion industry without borders.
